CPSIA Series: When one door closes…

by Walney on January 13, 2009

I had several blog topics lined up that I hoped to write during the week. After all, it’s January and time to get “back to blogging” I said in my last post. I even hinted at things to come and was excited to introduce them to you as well as those new to Whimsical Walney.

In the course of an evening, however, everything changed as I realized that I too fall under the new CPSIA law. I too must comply with certification for the February 10th deadline. I too…

In doing more research and talking with other people throughout the course of the day, I realized that I wasn’t the only one who thought it only applied to the handmade toy or handmade children’s goods market. While my core line is intended for children, it is not “handmade” therefore I didn’t think I needed to look deeper into this new law. Unfortunately, I was wrong.

For those unfamiliar with the CPSIA, it’s the Consumer Products Safety Improvement Act. If you want to see the official site click here. If you want to see what it is in layman’s terms and how it impacts real people, take a look at any one of these sites:

“When one door closes, another one opens” keeps running through my head and I remind myself that I must think big in the face of the CPSIA. I urge every small business to do the same they struggle through this difficult time.

While I will be blogging about what this mean to Walney’s next steps, I also want to help others who may have to shut their doors come February 10th, so I intend not only to feature some great companies over the next month but also to include some giveaways so you can enjoy their products.

In the meantime, please do what you can to let people know about this new law and get involved so that we can keep so many wonderful small businesses alive.
